Team PoliMI wins the 2021 competition of the Leonardo Drone Contest

After the success in the 2020 edition of the competiion, Team PoliMI, led by Gabriele Roggi, has won the 2021 edition of the Leonardo Drone Contest!

Congratulations to Gabriele Roggi, Salvatore Meraglia and Mattia Giurato and Matteo Matteucci for the outstanding performance in this very challenging task and to our spin-off ANT-X for the great work on the ROG-2 drone.

You can watch our last flight in the competition here.

ASCL to coordinate new GARTEUR exploratory group

The Group for Aeronautical Research and Technology in Europe (GARTEUR) has approved the new Exploratory Group EG-40 on "Gust Resilience of VTOL Aircraft", to be coordinated by Prof. Lovera.

Multirotor Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft have become very popular for many applications such as surveillance, monitoring, search, aerial surveying and photography, structure inspection and so on. They are also being proposed for personal transport aircraft (air-taxis) and for delivery services. Many of the most useful high-value applications occur in environments with gusty wind conditions, such as off-shore structures, rugged and mountainous terrain and urban areas. However, the aircraft are very light, and as such are very susceptible to wind gusts. This limits their operation in gusty conditions, particularly for applications where accurate hovering and/or landing is required.

The aim of the Exploratory Group is then to set-up a team of researchers able to investigate and test the different approaches that might be employed to achieve gust resilience of multi-rotor vehicles.

2021 IFAC Workshop on Aerospace Control Education

The IFAC Technical Committee on Aerospace approved the proposal by M. Lovera (ASCL Coordinator) and Paolo Castaldi (Università di Bologna) to organise in Milano (Bovisa Campus of Politecnico) in 2021 the first IFAC Workshop on Aerospace Control Education.

The primary goal of this workshop is to increase the awareness and knowledge of aerospace control educators about the current trends and technologies applied in modern aerospace control engineering education at different levels of degrees, Ph.D. included. Furthermore, the ways in which the aviation and aerospace community influences the educational process, as well as the effects that education has on the industry, it is another of the primary purposes of the workshop.

4th IFAC Workshop on Linear Parameter Varying Systems

The International Federation of Automatic Control approved the proposal by S. Formentin (DEIB, Politecnico di Milano) and M. Lovera (ASCL Coordinator) to organise in Milano in 2021 the 4th IFAC Workshop on Linear Parameter Varying Systems.

Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) systems are linear systems where the matrices depend on time varying parameters. This class of systems allows representing several types of dynamical systems such as time-varying uncertain systems, nonlinear systems, switching systems, multimodels,
etc. LPV modeling allows also the design of LPV controllers, where the controller gains parameters are updated according to the measurable plant varying parameters. In the last three decades, LPV systems and control has been an active topic of research in the control systems community.

This Workshop aims at presenting new results in the field of LPV systems and their applications in real life problems, by bringing together experts from different countries to discuss new trends, exchange new ideas, establish fruitful contacts, and promote interactions among the various fields of interest.

Leonardo drone contest

Leonardo announced on June 21 the Drone contest, in the framework of which six Italian Universities (Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Politecnico di Torino, Politecnico di Milano, Università di Bologna, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa, Università di Napoli Federico II) will compete in the development of technologies for autonomous drones. The PoliMI team will be formed by the ASCL and the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab of DEIB.
